Maybe that’s the difference then? Attitudes toward Russian language have gotten so negative that many Ukrainians will refuse to converse in it, even when it’s an obvious lingua franca.

Im legitimately curious if there are regional/dialect differences? I’ve spent nearly two months in-country since spring, and have worked with many Ukrainians over the years…

I speak imperfect Russian as a second language and have worked in and around the region for more than 15 years. So I promise I’m not speaking out of my ass.

So, regarding the pronunciation and spelling of the Capital of Ukraine. In Ukrainian, it is spelled Kyiv and pronounced Keev. In Russian, it is spelled Kiev and pronounced Key-ev. For obvious reasons, largely related to unwanted military touching, Ukrainians much prefer the former. Much of the western world has agreed…
