The comparison emphasizes the face, but the part that's actually terrible is the horrible amount of radial blur on the US cover. I feel dizzy just looking at it.

I wouldn't worry too much. Bethesda's GOTY edition covers tend to look quite similar to the original game. Oblivion's GOTY cover simply got a color change from light to dark, for example, and they both look like old, worn tomes with the logo prominently on the front. I love that series' cover designs.
