The problem with that is that Messi is not some outlier. There isn't nearly as strong a correlation between the kinds of physical attributes you're talking about and overall ability in soccer as there is in football or basketball.

I think a big part of this is that people who are MLS fans were not traditional sports fans before their local MLS product appeared.
