Thank you so, so much for this article. As someone still figuring out their gender identity—I’ve settled on gender-fluid for now—I’ve thought many times about gender reassignment and this article gave me so much hope.

You’re right, there are Asian Americans in the movie. But they’re cast in minor roles. So it’s tokenism.
It’s not whitewashing to set the adaptation in the USA, you’re correct.
You... could call it that, but it would make you look like an idiot. Whitewashing isn’t just about turning characters of color white, it’s also about taking away opportunities for representation from minorities. It’s not all about race—yes, some people, even some io9 writers, have made it seem that way, but the whole…
You’re right, Nightclub Girl is such an important role! And Watari, well, the show’s really about him, right?
When you say “it’s an adaptation by Americans set in America” to justify the lack of Asian Americans, you are essentially saying they don’t exist in America.
When you cast minorities in minor roles just to be able to say they’re on the cast list, that’s tokenism, not representation.
Oh true, you’re right, there’s no non-white people in America and there never have been. How silly of us!
No one cried, true, but a lot of people were disappointed. Just because you didn’t see it doesn’t mean it didn’t happen.
So there’s no Asian Americans in Seattle?
As a lover of spirits who cannot fucking stand whiskey and finds himself constantly invited to whiskey and bourbon bars, thank you for normalizing the disdain for wood-varnish-disguised-as-alcohol.
Ah, the old “if you think X, then you must be X” argument.
But then, wouldn’t that mean a person just... doesn’t like the show? There are dozens of sci-fi shows out there with consistent rules and internal logic. If your complaint about the show is that the formula is changing, maybe watch a different show. Cause that’s one of the main conceits of Doctor Who.
Oh, it was terrible. I’m just saying it’s not unprecedented for the show to change the rules about regeneration. Hell, the show has changed the rules about pretty much everything. The only rule in Doctor Who is that there are no rules.
Right, but, following the logic of the show being its own source material, any episode where the Doctor is female is true to itself. Because regardless of history, the show is being faithful to itself.
War Doctor.
I’m not going to concede that a show’s history is “source material” and I still hold that every single episode is source material, but I won’t argue that point further.
Doctor Who is it’s own source material, though. It’s not based on novels or comics.
The Silence made about as much sense as the Monks, only they were around for much longer.
Get fucked.
