the problem is in order for it to count towards your pokemon you have to have the app open and the screen on. Which means you will have to have your phone out the entire time you are walking around all day. If it tied into Google Fit (etc) then maybe this would be reasonable.

Yeah from my experience this trend started out as a way for a group of friends to circle boost a gym by defeating the magic carp over and over again then added more powerful Pokemon to it once its up to a lvl 6 or so.

The key is consistency. If you hit every Pokemon with the ball on the first toss you start to build up effectiveness. You can capture 300+ Pokemon with a normal ball as long as you are on a streak of hitting them at least 10 in a row.

The issue here is durability. If anything the military should look into the Galaxy Active line. The iphones will work great for maybe 1 round, but then they will all be broken and ruined by water.
