It can depend on the hotel. I stayed with two friends in a very nice Ryokan in the Fuji Five Lakes region where we all stayed comfortably in one room, and the price was very much based on the number of us taking up that room. It would have been nearly one third of the price for a single person to book the room.

Might be reasonable for a one-night stay if you’ve got a couple friends coming with, assuming the price doesn’t go up too much.
