I like to turn a sports conversation into a hobbies conversation or a would you rather type conversation. Something like this:

My job requires that I do small talk often and this sort of thing can backfire on you sometimes. I have one guy who I wanted to get to know better so I asked him questions about his job, and now he tells me all of the minute details of engine repair and everything he says just goes over my head so I have to just nod.

Then wear something that you do like to talk about such as a movie or geek t-shirt. If you are being a little more stylish at your event then some big splash of something different like a bowtie or even a bowler hat.

Baywatch suddenly showed up in my feed too. I wonder if they paid a bunch for it and want people to see it.

This also fixes some of the confusion of “did we say 6 or 6:30" When you tell everyone to meet at 5:49 it sticks in their head a bit better.

Depending on what you want to do with your files afterward I think you can import PDFs as a printout in OneNote and then make the text searchable (I am having a fight with my Microsoft Office License right now or I would walk you through the exact steps.)
