Except it’s not a gut feeling. Slamming the brakes exerts a lot of pressure on the ball of your foot. The sole of a shoe distributes the pressure more evenly. Basic physics.

True, but a bare bottom foot can be more sensitive to the pressure of a full push on the brake, or there is more likely to be slippage. Not to mention what might happen to your toes if you have to quickly move from the gas to the brake in a panic.

I don’t know about flip flops, but I do think driving barefoot is a bad idea. I’ve done it, and it just seems to me you can’t get quite the pressure on the brake that you can with something on your feet. So in the end perhaps the only time it might make a difference would be if you had a need to slam on the brakes.
