Idk. I never found it weird as a kid. It was just another Mario game to me. Considering the only others around at the time were 1 and 3 it wasnt really radically different. I remember the biggest difference I though was that you could pick peach or toad.

AvP2 was the best of the series. The best mp shooter of it's time. Class based with diffent classes of aliens, predators, and marines. Variety of game types. Bunch of cool options you could play with, alien life cycle with face huggers, queen molting, exo suits.
