The effect probably stems from how rendering in the game is done; you can see an example of a similar effect in Wipeout HD (I know, no wheels here, but hear me out), Grid 2 or even Need for Speed.

Okay, so I'll reword that. It's never SEEMED to be part of the culture here to me and to most (if not all) of the people I know. Because, well, I don't know anyone who's 120 years old and of sound mind to tell me about the good old days of gun ownership.
