American work culture is unique. We are probably the only country in the world that is obsessed with others believing we have a good work ethic. Even in Asian countries where people work an obscene amount of hours, they are not doing it because they want to be better than their peers.

I think that scene just showed gradations of bad with Short being Superbad and Carell realizing he may not be as innocent himself either, hearing someone else rationalize away their creepiness.
