The biggest issues with photovoltaic solar at the moment are the costs, both in terms of money, and in terms of environmental impact.

As Lucky Hermit said, even with subsidies we still end up paying for it in full — actually, we end up paying MORE, as we'd be paying through the government. The only reason I can think of as to why you'd think otherwise would be that you aren't a taxpayer.
