Fully understood. My comment was more directed to folks that recently bought a huge truck / vehicle that gets meh gas mileage for their commute (alone) and is now complaining how much it costs to fill up. Did they really forget the gas price spike in 2008 / 2009?

That’s a very specific use case that may not be realistic for all buyers. You can get some 3 row SUV’s in the 27-30 mpg range but the “plus gear” part means some type of roof box / hitch box which will give you a MPG penalty. Exactly. That wasn’t that long ago. Gas prices can and will go up. I guess it’s similar to the ARM mortgage thing. Most people are terrible at future planning and don’t think that rates / prices will go up in the future.

No. I have no faith in the general public to do anything remotely intelligent. Personally, I’m hopeful that gas prices stay high enough to push people into smarter choices.
