Hostels are super nice in Japan. I recommend the Sakura Hostel chain in Tokyo, Hostel 64 in Osaka, and K's House in Kyoto. Great if you're traveling alone and don't mind a communal bathroom, and they all have private rooms as well if you're with friends.

I stayed there too! They had a 4-pod private room on one of the women-only floors. Kind of nice. Comfortable sleep, and I was surprised I could sit up in it.

Most Japanese bicycles have the chains fully encased in metal, so no danger of the skirt (or pant leg) getting caught.

They're good for short periods of time. But they tend to re-inflate after a couple months. And the ones without a big plastic vacuum nozzle valve work better.
