I think badge engineering is taking an existing thing from an outside or very distant source and, with slight cosmetic differences, passing it of as your own. Planned sharing of the same platform is not the same thing.

There is a difference between badge engineering and platform engineering. I think you are referring to platform engineering. If there was an award for platform engineering, imho it would be:

Right on. I just tested a 3.0 Summit Grand Cherokee (sticker was $60k) and found the VM 3.0 extremely noisy. My old 3.0 CRD Grand Cherokee ('07) was way quieter and the the Merc 5 speed actually worked quite well.

4bt swaps SUCK. Big, heavy, and outdated. Do I love my 12v? Sure. But putting an old banger without a balance shaft where a lighter, better motor could be is plain ignorant..

I'm going with its a VM Motori banger with the Cummins logo. The Cummins/Mercruiser 2.8 is nothing more than a gear driven version of the VM motori used in the Jeep Liberty. Obviously here in the US the Cummins brand has a better following.
