1985-86, there was this show called Misfits of Science that seemed (at least to my hopeful viewing) to be inching towards the X-men, with characters barely in control of powers that seemed to echo the original X-team (Beast, Angel, Cyclops, Iceman and Marvel Girl).

As a child of the 60s in Florida, I recall a similar eradication effort that used sterile male Aedes aegypti.
They did have wire recorders then (for dictation) that would have been feasible, even the sound quality would have been terrible.
