As someone who doesn't consider themselves very good at action games, but still considers himself a hardcore gamer, I'll probably play through the game once in normal before trying out 1999 mode. I did the same with Fallout: New Vegas and its Hardcore mode.

There's no avoiding it at this point. There will always be retconns now that the story is so damn full already. The only remedy to this is the liberate the canon with more spin-offs and reboots.
