This is the first time I’ve seen anyone say much good about the later Foundation books. His prose improved, for sure, but the story in Foundation’s Edge, for instance, was just awful. I really didn’t need robots in Foundation, and I definitely didn’t need suspiciously Asimov-ish old men hooking up with sexy fembots.

I think he was genuinely trying to write a complex female character in Susan Calvin but Asimov wasn't great at characters in general. 

It’s fortunate then that none of the Asimov books I’ve read had decent female characters in them.

I’d agree with you about the original trilogy. Asimov got much better as a writer as he got older, so the later sequels (and the ones where he merged the series with his Robots series) are much better reads.
