They're necessary. The yellow lenses spoil the look of endurance cars I completely agree, but they're there for the best possible depth-perception for the drivers while driving at night or at dusk.
Just watching the footage for the first time as Ward gets out of his car and starts pointing his finger, advancing closer to the centre of the track. I wondered if for even a split second he remembered the hazards of the environment he was entering when he left his car, that his death was only potentially 5 seconds…
