Did you play Living Story season 2? They improved the story telling alot and as someone who didnt give a shit about the story before that made enjoy it atleast, for what its worth ^^

It’s not only about funding but about the creative freedom it allows, they dont have to listen some publisher when it comes to features and design. Also why change a winning concept, the first game was a huge success.

I took weeks and days off playing the game aswell but because i didnt want it to end, it kept surprising me with its length and rich content though and i ended up at 160-185 (+/- idling) hours before i completed it :) Still have a shit ton to do but ill wait for the expansions so i dont burn out on it now.
