Yeah, the difference here is that there's usually a considerable amount of time between MMO expansions so that you get a fair bit of mileage out of your gear before putting it out to pasture for the new stuff. We're talking well over a year and sometimes beyond.

331 is the current maximum base damage for weapons, while 300 is the pre-expansion damage cap. There are still weapons being used from both "generations", so people differentiate by referring to a gun as either a 300 or 331.
