For the spiral symbol I took that to be a symbol to infer spinning. The great disc of time endlessly turning. A movement symbol

Go back and watch again in a non high state. I could be totally wrong but there is a lot of supporting bits that are pushing the whole this story is not what it appears route.

Possibly though the supporting evidence is there. He mentions they only perceive time in a forward direction. The disc spins forward while the episode plays. They can't remember their past lives because that information was never written into the characters to begin with. Or when you turn off the DVD playerand start…

Exactly this show is unbelievably well written. From what I can tell every little scrap is important and reinforces one of multiple messages it is carrying. I came to this show hoping for a good cop show but I've never seen such a deep and bold experiment like this before. Maybe twin peaks but even that didn't break…

And also potentially active participant. If the membrane is a DVD then if you purchase the show and rewatch it you force the characters to relive their experience. Again and again.
