The system that audi/merc/beamer has, works really well as you see those cars braking on the autobahn very often (they usually drive 50 or so faster than other and they need to brake cause of traffic very often... 3 times I have met standing traffic while doing 110km/h... All 3 of those times I just came off the gas…

Very common and normal in Europe... Really... Smaller roads what are used more are usually 3 lanes wide + very wide shoulders so you can actually pass with oncoming cars safely.
