I’m really tired of her using the “human” thing as an excuse for all of this BS she’s spewing.
I’m really tired of her using the “human” thing as an excuse for all of this BS she’s spewing.
There are commenters that are being willfully obtuse or pedantic, but most people understand the context upon which I wrote this little rant. I’m talking about the subject of “blackness,” a largely American construct and how it relates to the legacy of the transatlantic slave trade from Africa. I’ve fielded comments…
Dolezal was first asked if she had ever straight-up lied to someone about her race. She replied, “No, because never have I been asked, ‘are you human or are you not human?’ Race as a construct has a fluid understanding. So I would say no.”
This! I have a friend I’ve know forever whose father is from Pakistan, and her mother is Italian. She has olive skin, and long black hair, and she gets asked CONSTANTLY “what she is.” And if she says any variation of “white,” “caucasian,” or “American,” they demand to know what her “parents are.”
“I’ve never lied. People just didn’t ask me the right questions.” Like, “is he your son?” “were you actually born in a teepee and you had to hunt your own food?” “Did you go to South Africa?”
She can talk like that because she’s a professor. Oh wait. No she’s not.
It really is the type of statement an 18 yo who just took sociology 101 at university, after living her entire life in white suburbia. I can identify them, because I was one.
She is just attempting to doublespeak her way out of this by throwing every bit of theory she can out there. I doubt she believes a single word coming out of her mouth. She is just trying to do the fraudster shuffle and hoping that she can go back to fooling everyone.
THANK YOU. It is also so satisfying to see someone finally be like “NOPE STOP WAIT” and cut her off when she says something ridiculous in her interviews. Guthrie did some good interuppting in this interview.
This smug, self-serving recitation of “race is a construct” by this woman is sickening. Lady, this isn't a hall pass for cultural appropriation.
Plus she was asked on one of her freakingg applications to check what race she was!! Not if she was part of the human race!! She checked black!
To me, if she wanted to have dreads or curl her hair so it looks natural, fine. But she so clearly didn’t just immerse herself in black culture or fashion. She was conning her friends and coworkers, and must have had to work hard to maintain the lies. As a white, African American studies professor she could play all…
Oh god, I was just like “GTFO with that Anth 1o1 bullshit reasoning” when she said that. (Not that the idea is bullshit - it’s valid within its context- just her application of it is bullshit.)
She lies by omission.
Oh yeah, totally. Race isn't biology, great. But it still exists, and you can still belong, or not belong, to a given race, so there's no reason she can't answer that question. If you didn't think race was real, or had concrete affects on people living in the US, why on earth would you join the NAACP?
And her doing this totally discredits the legitimate use of theory to understand identity. She’s endangering the progress made in getting people to recognize gender as fluid and sexuality as more than mutually exclusive checkboxes. She is fucking it up for lots of people.
Reposting, because fuck this noise:
The ocean is like...super deep...there could be a Kraken in there. That alone keeps me from getting in the ocean.
Wow. I’m not familiar with her outside of this blog so I was unaware she was that ridiculous. I thought she was run of the mill rabid over food issues, but that sounds legit crazy and very dangerous to me. You’d think that sort of thing would keep people from taking her seriously but alas..kraft is changing their…
There’s vitriol because we live in a scientifically-illiterate society where people are more willing to believe idiot sanctimommies on Facebook rather than experts who’ve dedicated their lives to understanding these issues. We live in a society where all it takes is the word “organic” to trick people into paying a…
