Depends, if there was a microwave above it with a vent - no, perfectly acceptable. It may have also been a down draft stove, with the vent in the middle of the unit, or built into the back.

There will always be the newer and better version of what you have, that's just the nature of the beast. Match the specs that work for what you need/want and go from there. It's ridiculous to hold out simply for the fear of buyer's remorse.
