You get that there are fewer parts...

... but you don't get that it complicates the manufacturing process
... Increases the overall weight of the block.
... generally doubles the amount of cams
... etc.

Because you are manufacturing TWICE the amount of major components vs a 4 cylinder.

An I4 is WAY cheaper to make than a mini V8 of the same displacement.

That being said, most of the big ole turbo diesels (the navistars, Volvos, and Cummins) make 350+ hp, 1 bajillion lbs of torque, and are mated to transmissions with about as many gears as I have had failed…
