“Scintillating scotoma” or ocular migraine are the terms for those. I used to get them as a precursor to an actual migraine; now that I’m on Mirena (hormonal IUD) they’re the only reminder that I used to get migraines.

For stuff like this, I use large plastic resealing lids for disposable canisters (from Costco-sized powdered creamer containers, for instance) as a cheap “coaster” to keep my counter clean. They’re pretty easy to wipe clean, or just toss out if they’re too nasty.
