Its the artist here. I would be willing to venture that its because you havent seen them animated. Many monster hunter designs lack charm without having seen them in motion. I had thought zinogre and brachydios looked awful until I saw them in game. Though I am still learning the style.

As a professional artist, you absolutely can compare drawing to sculpting. The guy came off a bit douchey, but he's not wrong. Its also weird that it took them over a month of 6 day weeks with several people working on it. Its simply not that large or that detailed a piece.

That shaymin was executed legitimately better, it has a much better sense of design, stronger use of color palette, and a more professional looking final product than her other work.
