opera mini is surprisingly good. it's also strange because it seems to completely circumvent any sort of school or other site blockers i have tried. maybe it has something to do with the site going through opera's servers first but i'm not sure.

While I admittedly don't use a 15 or a 17 inch MBP, I've never had problems on my 13 inch. This seems like a "Macbook Air slicing bread" sort of debacle.
In Safari, if you open a YouTube video and navigate to the Activity window, you can click on the largest file there (usually a ~20 megabyte file) to download it to your computer as an FLV file. You can then use the free VLC program to convert it, or just watch it.
