So ill throw my hat in as I’ve worked in Product at a streaming company - Please listen to this advice. It is extremely hard to develop for 8 year old smartTV hardware. the average life of a TV is much much longer than most people keep their streaming boxes because streaming boxes are just much cheaper to upgrade.

Netflix doesnt have ads so they have no incentive to release viewership numbers which would then in turn be used by their competitors. Nielsen is pretty well accepted as bad data, but the still used because they have nothing better to use. This seems like more of an issue for the companies buying and using inaccurate…

My guess is it was phishing or something similar. Disguise an email like a work email saying “Let me know what you think of this before EOD” or something similar with an attachment. Company like HBO is big enough you get emails from unfamiliar names all the time and hacker can mask the address to look likes its from…
