It was chosen for a reason. First, smaller stadium = less chance of it having more opposing fans than home fans. Second, who's going to have more problem playing in the cold (just with snow this time), Americans or Costa Ricans? It's all about getting a better home field advantage.
I haven't seen it in any stories about the game, but my guess is they chose Denver because they have a match in Mexico City on Tuesday. The Azteca Stadium is at over a mile in elevation so this match in Denver should help them acclimate. Just a guess.
