Apparently in the original Craigslist ad, the family said they wanted someone who was already receiving their retirement/social security. So that's where their cash would have come from. The family knew exactly what they were doing, it just backfired, and I think it looks good on them.

At one time, it was taken for granted that one income (nearly always a man's, but still) should be enough to support a family comfortably. I.e. an adult who stays home to do childcare and housework (let's not kid ourselves, that's WORK), a decent house, a car, food, clothes, savings for a rainy day.

I think the professor who has written extensively on the topic is aware of that. Anyway, regardless of the grading scheme, professors know when they have smart students who are capable of good university-level work and when the students are ill-prepared and not really suited to university. That's the real issue.
