I don't think it's that weird, actually. Lots of people have emotional reactions to events in celebrities' private lives, and sometimes they don't understand it themselves, but there it is. You had an intimate relationship with this person.

It's not unheard of to ask people to bring their own lawn chairs etc to a backyard BBQs and boils. I certainly wouldn't mind doing that.

So if I'm out running in the rain early in the morning and I encounter another runner and feel like giving them a thumbs-up or similar because not letting the weather stop you from running shows a level of determination that I respect, it would be patronizing IF the runner is fat, but not if the runner is skinny. I don't think it is as bad as all that. I've given thumbs up and said "good on you" to strangers in a variety of contexts. Sometimes it's just about being nice and supportive, and showing solidarity.

She's probably a good tipper too. I guess these people don't know what business they're in.
