Its got to be the Rover K-Series twin cam 4 banger that powered Rovers and MGs not only that it powered numerous kit cars and was even the first engine used in the Lotus Elise, a peppy little engine widely used and fairly unreliable but on its best day in the best car its urgency and zing belied its lowly beginnings.
