CVT was actually banned from F1 because of the fact it shaved whole seconds off lap times from the conventional geared brethren. Now I'm sure that Nissan's CVT isn't nearly as good as Williams' but you can see the writing on the wall when Subaru started offering it on the WRX. CVT is no longer just about economy.
