@whiskeyshoes: So wait, you think it'll be better without western influence? The "women must be demure" thing is world-wide. I think once one thing goes away, another just replaces it (e.g. my great-grandmother was one of the last generations of women to have bound feet.) However, good call on the WASPy women/attitude

@lilithmelpomene: Actually it depends on which western-raised women you talk to. Those who were raised by traditional grandparents are more influenced by old country culture (even if it's modern old country culture) than those who are not. My grandmother was very critical of me playing sports growing up. She was

@lilithmelpomene: And admitting to an eating disorder and/or mental health related issues are, for the most part, still frowned upon (at least more so than for westerners). You don't want to lose face.

@egged: Except people there are beginning to appreciated tans now - at least if you're a 20-something.

@squeakel: What I was trying to get at was that a 10 lb gain is proportionately more on someone who is, say, 5'1" than someone who is 5'5" (yes, I know this is four inches, not two)

@squeakel: But not for frame size. People with extra small frames (and extra large frames) shouldn't fall into the same "ideal range" as those who're not extra small or extra large.

@GirlFailer: Does it have to do with the belief that larger women aren't "delicate" and therefore "not feminine"?

Isn't the average Japanese woman about two inches shorter than the average American woman? As a poster said in the Jessica Simpson even the smallest amout of weight gain looks like it's more on shorter people. Also, since Asians tend to have smaller frames, "ideal BMI" is probably a smaller number than on

Let's blame western diets. Japanese people are fatter/bigger now than they were a few decades ago. If they kept their traditional diet, they'd probably be thinner.

@jerriblank: You know, I don't understand how people can take like 8 sizes into a dressing room. I didn't even realize people can have such a broad range. I tend to be the same across the board.

See, this shows that something's wrong wiith some school systems. Except for an art/architectural history course I took in the UK called "English Country Houses" (which involved going to various old "country houses" in the southern English country side each week), I have zero visual art/art history education beyond

@AlmostDream: Vanity sizing happens at all ends, except perhaps the highest of the high ends, IMHO. It's just more extreme at, say, Old Navy than BCBG.

I give Jake and Vienna 3 months.

You know what's interesting? I think Town & Country has had more non-white cover people than Nylon. And Town & Country is supposedly one of the WASPiest magazines around.

Interesting that this post is published the DAY AFTER NPC's International Badge Day.

If black women are having abortions, then tell me why there are so many black and black/mixed race babies and children in foster care, while it isn't the case for non-black children? I mean, say I want to adopt a child of Asian descent. I pretty much have no choice but to go international because there just aren't

Bigger feet, huh? No wonder I can't find 5s anymore.

Now playing

You know the article isn't Canadian-written when it calls the sport ICE HOCKEY. It's just plain HOCKEY, darn it! :)

Wait, if this is supposed to be every stereotype of Canada ever, then where's the maple syrup? It's in season, you know.
