Yeah, this was a big part of the last Jonathan Franzen, novel, believe it or not. The male protagonist, when he gets weird and reclusive, takes up birdwatching and gets really angry that his neighbors let their cat wander around and kill the local fauna.

Not to sound like a horrible troll, but could he maybe have just been trying to give good advice? Like, instead of saying "only drunk girls get raped, you boozy sluts," he was instead sort of saying "don't take the shortcut down the darkened alley because there are bad people down there?"

Perhaps it would have been

I don't know, but as of this moment I'm offering $100 to anyone who can produce video evidence of him or herself walking up to Black Israelite and asking the question, "Excuse me, sir, but what kinds of sects do you people have?"

Oh, the Black Israelites. They are nine kinds of amazing crazy.

Today in "White People Be Persecuted" on Jezebel...

Her voice acting is pretty boss, too. She's in the excellent, excellent BBC Radio adaptation of Neil Gaiman's "Neverwhere" as the female lead.

Wow, she actually seems super fun. Dunno what I expected, but yay.

This is the best thing I have ever seen. It's like the anti-Boston Bombing.

This times a thousand. My favorite are the people who want you to know they've suffered more than you, especially when you're like, "Yeah, going in for heart surgery next week, really not looking forward to it."

This is fucking awesome. Go read Earthsea, motherfuckers!

Our spokespeople were jobless wastrels who thought everything that made money was selling out and everyone who offered instruction was The Man. Your spokespeople are overparented sociopaths who don't understand why the world doesn't give them everything they want. Every generation gets identified by its assholes,

"History proves that women will always find a way to access abortion when in need." I think this, better than anything else here, encapsulates why abortion is a complex issue. Abortion ends the life of, in most cases, a human being that could have grown up to become a fully functioning member of society. Women,

You know, I'm a professional book reviewer, and I try to review as many women as possible (my bailiwick tends toward the thriller/SF/fantasy genre, rather than lit fic), and I just want to say that "Suicide Wood" is an infinitely better title than "Between Here and April."

You know absolutely nothing.

It's almost as though abortion was a complex moral issue that can't be encompassed by either side's asinine, insulting sound bites.

I do understand that. Do you understand that issues of intent are much more complex when dealing with small children, or are you one?

I'm sorry, I didn't see anything after "could have."

Kids plan to do terrible things a lot. This is clearly beyond the pale, but intent is much more complicated when you're dealing with children. I don't think they should be locked up, no. Yes, I think they should be forced to go to therapy.

I understand you. Conspiracy is an EXTREMELY subjective charge when you're dealing with kids this age, is what I'm saying. This article is written like they're a couple of miniature Hannibal Lecters, and that's really nasty and cruel and unsympathetic, full stop. I have zero faith in the ability of the juvenile system

I guess I tend to assume the worst. It snowballs, that's all I know how to tell you. I work with a lot of guys who end up in really bad places doing things they never thought they were capable of doing and to a man they all started out in the care of the state. I wish I had more confidence in the juvenile justice
