I think part of the issue is simple ease-of-use. It is easier to film a scene that takes place in a large, airy space than in a stuffy, walled-in one. Unless the movie is actually trying to highlight the tough living conditions, the apartment or house is merely a backdrop and not intended to be studied so closely.
