Which Muslim community are you a member of? I'm surprised that the Muslim women in your community cannot make their own choices. In the Muslim communities I've been a part of the women make their own choices. The Muslim women in my family make their own choices.

The thing is, outside help is just that - outside. I'm not sure how an outsider can help. Like I said, if someone wants to support local efforts (e.g., donate to local initiatives) that's one thing. But to come in, from the outside, not really understanding what it's like to be on the inside, how could one help? Also,

We don't need to be saved by non-Muslim saviours. That never turns out well...at all (e.g., colonialism, wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, Femen, etc.). Muslim women are doing lots for themselves. Like with anyone else, being an ally to Muslim women is good. Supporting our efforts is good. But trying to save us, like we

No we don't.

Eeek...ok. I think I'm going to have to read her book before I make any final conclusions about my thoughts on her. Classism? That's sad.

I'm a South Asian (read brown skinned) Canadian, Muslim feminist with socialist leanings. Republicans either hate people like me or view people like me in derogatory ways, even if they claim to like us. If it was only about fiscal issues, I could still respect that but given what it is today I can't get behind the

According to her tweets outlined above she's saying she is not and that it was all because of some show related joke which caused a misunderstanding. In fact, from her tweets she actually seems kind of disturbed to be called a Republican.

Thank God about Mindy! I had heard she was a Republican a little while back and it was holding me back from completely loving her. Now I can completely love and admire her like I want to!

Maybe many individual white people do not think this way, but the system, which is a white supremacist system, does. The system does not like it when POC are successful. It threatens the power centres. White people who do not think this way should actively challenge the system which benefits from the oppression of

I'm Canadian and I've said this before and I'll say it again - Read the comments section of ANY Canadian paper (and I mean any - G&M, Post, TO Star, etc.) when they publish ANY story (again, any) on immigrants, People of Colour, Muslims, Sikhs, Indigenous peoples or refugees, the majority of the comments will be

I agree. And it is complicated. I, of course, support the right to make the choice to have cosmetic surgery. But, I also believe that our choices, no matter how individualist we may think they are, DO impact others around us. If someone chooses to get cosmetic surgery to have features which are considered ideally

Thank you for sharing that. I was thinking that the colonizers had something (a lot) to do with the gender gaps.

Ugh! Gyms are the devil! Not only are their contracts almost impossible to get out of, even when you are able to get out of them they'll often continue to charge you! That happened to me twice, with two different gyms in two different provinces in Canada, and it happened to my husband in Michigan.

That is sad. Why is it that things changed this way? Are the forces of capitalism just too strong?

Interesting theory. However, one thing I have to disagree with is this statement:

It's already starting to. On my last visit to Pakistan my cousin was telling me that, slowly, the concept of men holding hands or showing affection is also being seen as "something only gay men do"in Pakistan as well. So it seems Western conceptions of masculinity are spreading. :(

True. I agree. But I always hope that people will think more critically and realize that making generalizations about over 1 billion people is illogical. But alas, logic is sometimes too much to ask for, I guess.

I also would hope that people (non-Muslim) would be a little more humble, not assuming they know more

I always wonder if it's possible to have a post on Jezebel be about Muslims and not get any Islamphobic comments filled with tired old stereotypes about Muslim men and women. But apparently, from these comments, it seems that's not possible here. There's always plenty of Islamophobia and stupid stereotypes around

I agree. I like this one more.

I would LOVE to see more videos like this, disrupting the narrative of female objectification and challenging the use of women's bodies to make money.

"I guess that is the thing in America, you have this pressure to be seen as a "true American" and belong. And that is the brand of racism that exists for visible minorities in America—no matter how long you and your ancestors have lived there you are seen as not true Americans based on your skin colour because as you
