The reason why people want that is that not having those rights recognized can be very detrimental (visiting rights in hospitals, inheritance rights, etc). @perdue: The problem is that people use 'had sex with' as a so-called neutral term. As in, if the rape is alleged, 'having sex with' can be written as a neutral term when the facts surrounding consent are still in dispute.

By the way, the Houston Chronicle's reporting that the victim's mother temporarily lost custody and that the family is not allowed to see her, made me endlessly, endlessly sad.

Your comparison of male views of women and your own views of men ignore the fact that, within our patriarchal society, (white, straight) men are seen as *individuals*, whereas individual women are viewed as members (and representatives) of a class, of a type.
