At least in Finland sedans have mostly disappeared. Peugeot, VW, Citroen/C5 wagons that used to be plenty have been replaced by Skoda and BMW/Audi wagons. Volvo is still going strong, though they have lost the dominance of V70 back in 2003-2007. Golf has become the norm car, and 1, A3 and A class are going strong.

It's kind of interesting how it has evolved differently especially in norther Europe compared to US when it comes to SUV's. Status symbol is of course what you and people around you perceive as status symbol. Here in Nordics AMG, M and RS wagons are as much of a status symbols as their SUV counterparts.

I can't talk about all WRC races, but there's a carnival feeling at least on the Finnish rally. Seems to be the same with Monte Carlo judging by this. Looking it from outside US, it seems like a atmosphere more often found from US motorsport events.
