I own one and they are a fair bit nicer than the average small car. I also save about a net $150/month driving it.  That is $1,800/year savings which would allow you to recoup the extra investment over a comparable car pretty quickly.

I just bought one and I concur with your opinion.  Chevy did a HORRIBLE job  of communicating just what the Volt was to people.  I still have to explain to people that the engine in the Volt does not actually turn the wheels of the car.
