I know Costco allows members have a second card, a gift card if you will, to give to someone else they know they would like to shop at the same places. I don't believe there is any limit to the number of times they can go with these secondary cards.

I'm a Programmer and Web Dev, and I have to disagree with the "slimy practice" comment. You actually gave yourself the answer that justifies the point of this, in that most people wouldn't pay (any amount) for these apps.
Someone always makes this comment. This is a nitpick, imo. We've gotten to the point where these terms are interchangeable. App is just shorthand for application.
Somewhat on topic, kinda off... But why do even good, useful, sometimes required, and highly recommended apps still come with toolbars and other crap that will destroy your computer (unless you're smart enough to manually uncheck the option during install). Or come from download sites where it's somewhat impossible…
