You make a very good point there. While not everyone may feel that way, some backers might feel like something is being held ransom.
My take away from it seemed to be that when an initial backer backs a project, they back the project because of the project and NOT because of stretch goals. Then when stretch goals start being added, it sort of changes the original project which the initial backer signed on for.
