The need to use the “professions” isn’t used throughout the series, only in those places where it serves a function. It does serve that function and IMHO, contributes greatly to the mysterious qualities that hooked me in the story. As Andrew says, it works.

They are multifuel. When I was in the army they swapped from diesel (which they ran fine on) to JP8 (which they also ran fine on). I always figured you could drink real heavy then piss in the tanks and they'd run.
