Sorry to double comment but I think it’s also worth mentioning that cases without the death penalty cost $740,000, while cases where the death penalty is sought cost $1.26 million. Maintaining each death row prisoner costs taxpayers $90,000 more per year than a prisoner in general population.
Additionally, if we put him to death, then he gets what he wants and the alt-right gets the martyr they want. Both good reasons to let him live a long long long healthy life in jail.
But if your moral code allows for exceptions, what use is it? What good is a justice system that isn’t applied equally in all cases?
Do we as a society sentence rapists to be raped? Do we take someone’s leg, if their negligence causes an accident that means someone has to have their leg amputated? No, because we are a civilized society with a code of ethics that would consider “eye for an eye” barbaric. So, why is the death penalty acceptable? How…
