To be fair she stayed out of the limelight for most of her adult life. She was a very active and charitable person, but it's understandable that most images of her are from when she was in front of a camera.

Well the definition of empathy is being able to personally identify with someone else's problems, that's how it's empathy and not sympathy. "I know the feeling" vs "I can't imagine." So yes, one would have to experience the problem (or something similar that they could relate to) to be empathetic. Still mean-spirited.
