IX is probably my favorite. Characters had the most character, the story rocked until the last disk. (PS the protagonist of 9 was Zidane, not Tidus). It was a bit childish, but compared to the self serious dredge of 7 and 8 it was a nice relief.

Yeah, but look at the end of the story. After all of that it ended with Peter basically saying, "So what. None of it matters. What matters is now." So it's essentially the same thing.

Personally, I think it peaked with Mario Kart DS. 64 was the next best, but going back and playing it, I much prefer the controls of the newer games. There's an awful lot they did in the newer games I don't like, though, and 64 has the best battle mode stages by far.
