I know, it's horrible. Worse was the immediate judgement on THEIR part when I objected. They told me that "this is how you drink whiskey." I was like, I'm sorry, but I've been in Ireland multiple times with family and never seen this. Ever. But I was wrong because I was a lady. Ugh!

Ha! Personal experience. I grew up in an Irish household and when these dudes made a big pitcher of ice water to pour in their whiskey I just... shuddered.

I think it is mostly perspective... Though going through old castles/manor houses in the British Isles, a lot of the beds were shorter because people slept sitting up (something about the soul escaping if you lay down flat).

Brooklyn brewery does a chocolate stout which comes across, to me, like chocolate syrup/fudge. At a tasting they poured it over ice cream like a topping. Not bad!

In some ways, it is easier - in my situation I had to leave work because of health issues and was lucky enough to be able to stay home. Even if that were to happen, you still need to figure out what to do with yourself. Scrubbing toilets and doing laundry are not all day, every day activities. (Not that those are the only things to do if you stay at home - I write, make jewelry, play the piano, etc). But there's a level of unexpected tedium.
