Don't feel too bad, in the new Amazon book 'the everything store' amazon boasted about doing this to their book distribors in the early days to get around minimum order amounts. They would order one customer book and some old out of print book to reach the minimum and then cancel the order. Seems only fair!

Ditto. Hearing people speak and/or sing in Spanish (what I was learning) helped me to work on the smaller details, which helped me to get to the next level. Looking up the lyrics helped, too!

I think part of the allure of this method was that the OP was often upstairs, in a part of the house far away from the door - he needed something that he could hear elsewhere in the house, that was louder than a bell attached to the door, for example.
